My names are Mukakanani Claudine, I am a mother of 3 children but I don’t have a husband. Just after giving birth to my third child, the church encouraged us to go have test on HIV/AIDS, and then I decided to go for the test. Unfortunately, I found I was positive, it was not easy but God helped me to deal with it. They advised me for counseling and prescription at the hospital that, which I did. I got the medicines and there was a program of counseling and we were told that not to lose hope but continue with life. At the time we used to go to the main hospital in Byumba [a 10 km walk in each direction!], they kept on treating us well and providing us with medicines. After some time, I also took my child, he was still young and he was also found positive At the time, even the church in Byumba remained close to us, caring and helped us make a cooperative.
A time came when the Anglican Church here in Kibali, built this health center. They realized that we were suffering a lot by going all the time at Byumba so they transferred here to this clinic. We were so relieved from the journey we used to take to Byumba, you know the one who has HIV becomes weaker and it is easier to get many kinds of illness. Sometimes they can be defeated by the weight of the many medicines we are taking and it was hard even to be able to go to the hospital.
But since this clinic is here, they treat us well and provide us with needed medicine, it is no longer hard for me to come even when the body becomes weak, I manage to come because I live very close to here. You see that they help me better; I tell them whatever problem I’m facing with whether the medicine has been hard for me. They give me what I need, check with all the exams that can help and advise me on what I should do. They measure my blood pressure, how my body’s cells and globules are doing which help them see what I need most at the moment. They really take care of me. When we were still going to Byumba, certain times we could not be able to go there for we were very weak. But with this clinic closer, even when we are not able to come, Doctors here come to check on us in our homes, treat us well with so much care and needed advices and thus my life can go on.
